Regardless of the type of service provider (e. g. Wireless, Wireline or Cable), all have implemented IP-based networks for voice, video and data.  These services are now provisioned with speeds up to 10Gb/s.  Some example technologies are Metro Ethernet, MPLS, XG PON, DOCSIS 3.0, and LTE.  The biggest drivers for higher speeds are multimedia and network-based enterprise applications. 10G Ethernet networks are not only commonplace but a requirement. Traditional monitoring infrastructure is not adequate for security, application performance and troubleshooting at 10G.  The volume and types of traffic overwhelm existing monitoring tools without the use of Pinpoint Packet Inspection™ to identify, isolate and replicate only the traffic of interest to monitoring tools.

As an example, most storage devices (e. g. data recorders) have a “write-to-disk” limit below 10Gb/s. If a data recorder could write to disk at full 10Gb/s line rate, that rate would be the equivalent of 4.5 TB/hour. In just over 10 hours, a 48 TB data recorder is full. Using RedDot Networks with Pinpoint Packet Inspection™, service providers can pre-filter any type of traffic (i. e. even when traffic is not in a fixed location), so monitoring tools only receive traffic of interest and are subsequently not overwhelmed.

RedDot Networks’ products have been designed to operate in service provider environments with optional -48V DC power supplies, very low power consumption (e. g. less than 80W) and minimal cooling required. The products can be configured through a web-based GUI or using a command line interface which can be used in conjunction with scripting/automation.
